A Tribute to My Grandmother: Mary Alice Yakich
My grandmother, Mary Alice Yakich, was truly a political pioneer. For nearly 10 years, much of what she helped introduce and implement as the 6th district alderperson have grown to what you see today along the Interstate 94 & Ryan Road Interchange, and much of the public infrastructure that Oak Creek has near Puetz Road & Howell Avenue. Her efforts have helped pave the way for what the City of Oak Creek looks like today.
In many respects, I want the City of Greenfield to have the same opportunities and continued investment many of our neighboring communities have. I want to preserve the environment (and will continue to do so, serving on the Tree and Beautification Commission), whilst assisting in managing the much needed growth in population Greenfield will inevitably need to sustain our new public infrastructure projects.
I wish she was still here to see my attempt at public office in person, along with my grandfather, Walter.
Please enjoy the articles and news clippings; much of what you see here is what my mother has archived over the years.
I do have to note for accuracy, that my grandmother was not the first woman alderperson elected into public office in Wisconsin (according to historical records, she was the second) woman alderperson in Wisconsin. The above article was published January 28, 1999, in The Pictorial, locally, in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. Below are various articles & news clippings from the Milwaukee Sentinel, and my grandmothers’ nameplate.
